Home Folders

BIOPOLIS/CIBIO users are provided with a dedicated home directory/folder for storing and managing their files. This directory offers ample storage space of 500 gigabytes for personal data, research documents, and other work-related files. This directory is private and other users do not have access to it by default.

Specifications

• SMB Protocol Access: Access your home directory from any device within the CIBIO network or using the VPN connection.

• Offline Access Limitations: Offline access to your home directory is not possible due to security and data integrity considerations. However, you can access your files anytime from within the CIBIO network or VPN.

• Quota: The maximum storage capacity for your home directory is 500 gigabytes. Once this quota is reached, you won't be able to add new files until you free up some space by removing existing ones.The maximum capacity (quota) cannot be expanded beyond the value defined in the IT-03 Storage Space and Use Policy.

Proper Use Recommendations

• IO-Intensive Operations: The home directory is optimised for archiving and storing data, not for continuous IO operations. 

  • In general, any application that requires a lot of disk access should not have the data placed in the home directory. This includes applications that are constantly reading or writing data to disk, as well as applications that are handling a large number of concurrent users. 

  • Running these types of applications in data stored in the home directory can significantly degrade the performance. For instance, playing or editing a video directly requires a lot of disk access to read and write video files. Therefore, you may copy the file to be played/edited to the local disk and then play/edit the file, and eventually copy the edited file back to the homes directory.

• Offloading Unused Data: Regularly review your home directory and offload any unused or unnecessary files to external storage or other dedicated repositories. This helps maintain efficient storage utilisation and ensures you have sufficient space for essential files.
